If you are age 70+ and renewing your driver’s license, you might not need to take a test. Check your renewal notice to be sure.

If you are required to pass a knowledge test, select “eLearning” when completing the online application for a fast, no fail option. You can complete a Driver’s License and ID Application online or at a DMV office.

The DMV wants to help seniors to maintain and continue their driving independence and ensure driver safety. Here’s helpful information for seniors covering a variety of topics, including driver’s license and ID card renewals, eLearning, tests, and other important services.

Your Driver’s License and ID Card

Renewing your driver’s license (DL) or ID card is easy, especially if you prepare ahead of time. For seniors aged 70+ years, most of the renewal process can be done online, like starting the application and taking the eLearning course, if required.

Online Learning and Tests

Regardless of age, you may be required to pass a knowledge test and/or a vision test. Testing helps to determine a driver’s mental and/or physical condition, their ability to follow traffic laws and rules, and whether their DL is renewed, restricted, suspended, or revoked.

Your Health

As we age, we change physically and mentally. These changes can and do affect our driving skills. Getting older does not automatically make us poor drivers. Many people continue to be safe drivers well into their golden years.

Services

The DMV has a variety of additional services and support depending on your needs.
