The following is information for the service of court filings upon the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and its employees.
Service must be made at the DMV Headquarters in Sacramento by personal service or mail service. Service must comply with the applicable codes including Vehicle Code section 24.5. The DMV does not consent to electronic or facsimile service of process. No other DMV location is authorized to accept service. Service of process regarding an auto collision that involves a nonresident defendant may be made on the Director of the DMV on behalf of the nonresident pursuant to Vehicle Code section 17454. Service using this method must include: a copy of the summons and complaint or “Plaintiff’s Claim and Order to go to Small Claims” form; a $2.00 processing fee for each nonresident defendant (checks, money order, and cash are acceptable); and requests must be personally served or mailed by certified/registered mail to the address below:

Service of process regarding dealer or remanufacturer may be made upon the Director of the DMV pursuant to the requirements of Vehicle Code section 11710 subdivision (d). Service must include a copy of the summons and complaint and a fee of $5.00 paid to the Director at the time of service (checks, money order, and cash are acceptable). Service may be made by mail or personal service at the following address:
