Just because the REAL ID enforcement date has been delayed, no need to delay getting one

Pacoima – Getting a REAL ID quickly at the Pacoima Driver’s License Processing Center (DLPC) does not require a holiday miracle – it’s business as usual. For busy customers, a REAL ID appointment at the Pacoima DLPC may be the speediest and easiest errand on their to-do lists. That’s because this San Fernando Valley office only processes driver’s licenses and identification cards, making it the perfect place to get a REAL ID.

At a news conference held at the Pacoima DLPC this morning, DMV Director Steve Gordon and Hollywood Burbank Airport Director Frank Miller said just because the date for the federal REAL ID enforcement has been delayed, there is no reason Californians should delay getting one.

“I suggest you make your schedule and check it twice, because now is an ideal time to upgrade to a REAL ID if you haven’t already,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “Go ahead and give yourself the gift of crossing off a REAL ID from your holiday to-do list.”

“As we close out 2022, getting your REAL ID now is a great way to plan for your future travel to avoid possible interruptions,” said Hollywood Burbank Airport Director Frank Miller.

Californians will need a REAL ID or other federally approved identification to fly within the U.S. starting May 2025.  They can start the application online at REALID.dmv.ca.gov and upload their documents before visiting a DMV office to complete the process. Customers must provide:

  • Proof of identity* – One original or certified document (e.g.,: valid passport, birth certificate)
    • *Legal name change document(s) is required if the name on the proof of identity is different from the name on the other documents (e.g., marriage certificate, adoption papers)
  • Proofs of California residency – Two documents, paper copies (e.g., utility bills, bank statements)
  • Social Security number (exceptions may apply)

Online Services

The DMV offers an increasing variety of digital services. Most DMV tasks no longer require an office visit. The DMV encourages customers to use online services to complete transactions, such as eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can use the Service Advisor on the DMV website to explore their options for completing DMV tasks.
