Chapter 10: Renewals

10.160 Renewal Sticker Placed on the Wrong Vehicle

If year stickers were inadvertently placed on the wrong vehicle, the following procedures must be followed:

If the ApplicationIs still in the officeThenHave the customer submit any remnants of the erroneously applied sticker.

Process a no-fee substitute sticker application for the vehicle the sticker was inadvertently placed on, if necessary.

Submit any remnants of the erroneously applied sticker with your work.
If the ApplicationWas already transmitted to DMV headquarters
ThenHave the customer submit any remnants of the erroneously applied sticker.

Have the customer complete a REG 156 (PDF) with the replacement box checked.

Process a no-fee substitute sticker application.

Process a no-fee substitute sticker application for the vehicle the sticker was inadvertently placed on, if necessary.

Submit any remnants of the erroneously applied sticker with your work.

All incorrect and/or mutilated stickers must be turned in for destruction.

Note: If the incorrect sticker cannot be removed from the license plate, advise the applicant to place the new sticker over it.
